Target Tops Profit Forecasts But Misses on Revenue as Shoppers Pull Back

Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) on November 19, 2025, reported third-quarter financial results that exceeded profit expectations but fell slightly short on revenue, signaling pressure from constrained consumer spending ahead of the holiday season.

The retailer posted an adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.78, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.76 and other analyst estimates. However, this figure represents a decline from the $1.85 EPS reported in the same period last year. The company's GAAP EPS was $1.51. This dip in profitability was attributed to a larger-than-expected drop in quarterly comparable sales as U.S. consumers face financial constraints.

Total revenue for the quarter was $25.28 billion, narrowly missing the forecasted $25.33 billion. The result marked a 1.5% decrease from the previous year, reflecting softness in discretionary categories as shoppers focus more on essential goods.

A closer look at Target's financial health reveals a mixed picture. The company's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio stands at a reasonable 10.25, with an earnings yield of 9.76%. However, a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.32 indicates a significant reliance on debt financing. The current ratio, which measures short-term liquidity, was 0.99, suggesting the company has just enough assets to cover its immediate liabilities.

As Target heads into the crucial holiday shopping season, the recent sales performance presents a challenge. The company must navigate an environment where consumers are limiting spending on non-essential items like apparel and home decor.
