CarMax Under Investigation for Allegedly Misleading Investors
CarMax, Inc. (NYSE:KMX) is facing an investigation by the law firm Faruqi & Faruqi, LLP regarding allegations that the used vehicle retailer misled investors about its growth prospects and business operations.
The investigation focuses on claims that CarMax's growth in fiscal 2026 was temporarily boosted by unsustainable customer speculation on tariffs, which allegedly led to misleading statements. This scrutiny follows the company's second-quarter financial report for fiscal 2026, which disclosed a significant downturn in its finance division.
The company reported an 11.2% decrease in income from its CarMax Auto Finance (CAF) segment. This was driven by a $142.2 million provision for loan losses, a notable increase from the $112.6 million provisioned in the same period of the previous year.
In response to the financial disclosure, CarMax's stock price dropped by approximately 20%, closing at $45.60 on September 26, 2025. A class-action lawsuit has been initiated, and investors who suffered losses between June 20, 2025, and September 24, 2025, have a deadline of January 2, 2026, to apply for the lead plaintiff position.
Reflecting a bearish outlook, Evercore ISI maintained a Reduce rating for CarMax on November 6, 2025, while Benchmark downgraded the stock to a Hold rating. The stock is currently trading at $34.20.
